HISTORY OF "LORD MAHAKAALSHWAR"

The history of Mahakaaleshwar Jyotirlinga dates back several centuries. Reference to the temple can be found in ancient Hindu scriptures such as Matsya Purana, Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana.


                     

Mahakaaleshwar Jyotirlinga is a world famous religious place which is characterized by a unique form like Dakshina Murti facing South which is rare among all 12 Jyotirlingas. Ujjain is also known in all four cities to host the Kumbha Mela, a major Hindu expedition and festival. This beautiful attractive place is located on the banks of Shipra River. This place is covered with lots of ancient temples. They are: -

HARSIDDHI TEMPLE This beautiful place is dedicated to Goddess MAA HARSIDDHI, who is considered to be the Avtar of Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. A piece of the sacred rock from Vaishno Devi is said to have been brought to Ujjain in historical times and installed in Maa Harsiddhi temple symbolizing the divine union between the two goddesses. This temple attracts a crowd as well as large number of devotees throughout the year, especially during Navratri festival.



SANDIPANI TEMPLE – According to mythology Lord Krishna and Balarama spent their childhood in Vrindavan but their parents Lord Vasudeva and Devaki spent them in Sandipani Ashram to gain knowledge and wisdom where they studied various subjects and mastered arts and sciences. and other spiritual wisdom under Sandipani Guruji.
             
                                         

Mangal Nath Temple – A temple dedicated to Lord Mangal or Mars, one of the nine celestial planets in Hindu astrology. It is called the birthplace of Mars. Prayers and rituals performed here are believed to reduce the negative effects of Mars and bestow blessings of luck, courage and protection. It is also said to be the place where the famous astronomer and mathematician Aryabhatta came to visit.

                                 

SIDDHNATH TEMPLE – Also dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple has a long history dating back many centuries. It was established during the reign of Parmar dynasty, making this temple an ancient place of worship. A large number of devotees come here in the holy month of Shravan, as well as on Mondays, which are considered particularly auspicious for Lord Shiva. This temple serves as a place of tranquility where devotees can connect with the divine and find inner peace.

                                           

KAAL BHAIRAV TEMPLE – Located in the heart of Ujjain, the temple is considered one of the most divine places in the city. The temple is known for its association with Lord Kaal Bhairav, who is considered as a guardian of the divine power of Ujjain. “Grand Procession Dedicated To Lord Shiva”

Baba Mahakaal Shravan Sawari in Ujjain is a significant and highly anticipated event that takes place during the holy month of Shravan in Hindu calendar. It is an integral part of the month-long Shravan Mahotsav celebrated with great enthusiasm in Ujjain. It started as a way to celebrate and cheer the sacred river water of specially designed vessels known as kanwars and offer it to Lord Shiva in various temples. The Shravan Sawari procession is not only a religious event but also a social and cultural phenomenon. It brings together devotees from different parts of India and creates a sense of unity and devotion.

During Sawari, the icon of Lord Mahakaaleshwar in the form of Lord Shiva is taken out in a procession on a specially decorated vehicle called 'Palki' which is known as 'Sawari' (Beautifully decorated Doli).

                                         


                                       

Procession starts from the Mahakaaleshwar temple and passes through various streets of Ujjain attracting a large population of devotees. The streets are fully decorated with lights, flowers and festive decorations creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.

At the mere sight of Lord Mahakaaleshwar, a large number of devotees gather and all the streets are covered with them just for blessings. People sings devotional song like "BOL BAM" or "KANWAR GEET" dedicated to Lord Shiva. These songs express love, feelings, devotion and desire for the blessings of Mahakaal Baba.

Shravan Sawari brings people from different backgrounds together irrespective of caste, creed or social status or fosters a sense of bond and friendship and shared mutual devotion.

Devotees pray, sing hymns and engage in devotional activities during this procession.

Sawari is considered a very auspicious and auspicious occasion for devotees. Participating in the procession and witnessing the divine presence of Lord Mahakaaleshwar is believed to bring blessings, spiritual fulfillment and protection. It is said that Varun devta also welcomes Lord Mahakaal in the form of rains.
